Pre & Post Sports Massage
Relax and recuperate from the physical demands of training and/or competition, while enhancing athletic preparation.
Treat injuries and/or preventative!
Sports massage is the specific application of massage techniques, hydrotherapy protocols, range of motion/flexibility protocol and strength-training principles utilized to achieve a specific goal when treating an athlete.
The particulars of the sports massage technique are specific to the athlete's sport of choice. Focusing on areas of the body that are overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements. Sports massage employs deep pressure techniques to targeted muscle groups, warming the muscles, and flushing out post-workout toxins.
Regardless of the athlete's level of activity pre- and/or post-workout can be beneficial for: increased flexibility, reduced fatigue, improved endurance, helps prevent injuries, reduce recovery time, and restoration. Since, an athlete's body greatly affects his/her potential performance and has much to do with the enjoyment that comes from training and competition, a uniquely designed sports massage can aid in optimal performance.
The key principals an experienced sports massage therapist will focus on are:
- Timing - when the massage is given: pre- or post-event, during recovery, during a maintenance period, or when an athlete suffers an injury that requires rehabilitation.
- Technique - refers to the modalities utilized, such as; effleurage, friction, pettrisage, vibration, shaking, compression, broadening strokes, direct pressure, cross-fiber friction, range of motion, and stretching.
- Intent - the reason(s) for treatment; as a warm-up, to increase blood flow, stimulate neurological pathways, aid recovery from exertion, increase flexibility, improve strength, and/or improve posture.
A sports massage therapist who understands the three key principles of sports massage should be able to apply the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time.
Mastering the art of sports massage takes years of education and experience, not to mention a love of athletics. No one modality, technique or approach works every time. So, couple your regular workout regimen with a sports massage and experience the benefits first hand...
